Lockheed Martin and Boeing‘s joint venture United Launch Alliance has selected the winners of its launch support attachment bracket design challenge for the Atlas V rocket.
Nic Adams will receive $10,000 and the opportunity to have his support bracket design incorporated on a future Atlas V mission as the first place winner of the 3-2-1 Liftoff! ULA Rocket Hardware Challenge, ULA said Thursday.
Vishale Gandhele and Winston Jennings will receive $3,000 and $2,000 respectively as the competition’s second and third place winners.
A panel of judges that consisted of ULA CEO Tony Bruno and engineers from the joint venture and Stratasys evaluated the finalists on their proposals’ edge distance, part stress and support materials.
“We were very impressed with the quality of work displayed, and honored to be able to judge the submissions,” said Mark Peller, vice president of ULA’s engineering unit.
He added that the challenge was launched in efforts to reach out and promote the aerospace industry to the next generation of scientists and engineers.
The challenge was hosted by Stratasys’ GrabCAD division.
