Physical Optics Corp. has been awarded a five-year, $24.5 million contract to complete the development and procurement of micro weather sensors and advanced micro weather sensors for the U.S. Air Force.
POC will manufacture the sensors in Torrance, California, through Nov. 9, 2021 under the follow-on contract to a previous Small Business Innovation Research Requirement award, the Defense Department said Wednesday.
MWS is designed to gather current local weather data through the use of integrated sensors and send the information via Iridium‘s satellite network to command and control elements or airborne platforms.
The Air Force obligated $4.9 million from its fiscal 2017 research, development, test and evaluation and “other” procurement funds for the first delivery order.
The initial order covers two micro weather sensor test units and two advanced micro weather sensors, as well as non-recurring engineering and production readiness support services.
