IBM and NVIDIA have partnered to build a new machine learning tool in an effort to speed up how computers operate and help them learn in a human-like manner.
The PowerAI deep learning software toolkit operates on the IBM Power S822LC server that incorporates the NVIDIA NVLink interconnect technology and four GPUs that run AlexNet with Caffe, a deep learning framework developed by Berkeley Vision and Learning Center, IBM said Monday.
IBM’s Power S822LC server is part of the company’s OpenPOWER LC lineup configured for artificial intelligence applications.
PowerAI contains binary distributions of deep learning frameworks such as Caffe, Torch and Theano, as well as the IBM and NVIDIA versions of the Caffe deep learning frameworks, namely IBM-Caffe and NVCaffe.
IBM also configured the distributions to unify the IBM POWER8 chip with the NVIDIA NVLink interface on the IBM Power S822LC server.
IBM also intends for PowerAI to expand the artificial intelligence capability of Watson, IBM’s cognitive platform.
