FIRST, Booz Allen Hamilton and Qualcomm have hosted an event aboard the USS Midway aircraft carrier museum in San Diego to support science, technology, engineering and math education.
FIRST said Thursday the event highlighted collaborative efforts across the education, corporate and military sectors to boost STEM education in San Diego’s military and underserved communities.
“The average military child goes to as many as eight different schools, and as a result, military children tend to lack access to consistent STEM education experiences that move with them,” said Jennifer Brooks, a Booz Allen vice president.
Brooks added Booz Allen has supported FIRST since 2004 and will continue to work with the organization in efforts to increase access to STEM education.
The event featured live robot demonstrations from FIRST students; USS Midway tours and exhibits; and testimonials from local student and mentor speakers on FIRST programs.
San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate presented a city council proclamation to FIRST President Donald Bossi that recognizes the nonprofit’s impact on the city’s youth.
