droneEchodyne has completed an airborne test of a detect-and-avoid radar technology mounted on a commercial small unmanned aerial vehicle.

The company said Nov. 8 its radar is designed to help UAVs sense moving and stationary obstacles with radar vision when drones fly through the airspace beyond the operator’s line of sight.

The tests were conducted using Echodyne’s patented Metamaterial Electronically Scanning Array and developer kit radar that offers electronic scanning capacity.

“Unlike other sensor technologies such as cameras and LIDARs, radar provides accurate tracking of obstacles at long range across a broad field of view in all types of weather,” said Eben Frankenburg, Echodyne founder and CEO.

Frankenburg added the company performed the tests in an effort to demonstrate the use of its radar technology in  small UAV operations.
