The Department of Homeland Security seeks to install facial recognition cameras in airports in a move to assess the information system that supports the Customs and Border Protection’s traveler exit protocol, Nextgov reported Monday.
Mohana Ravindranath writes a solicitation released in early November seeks mounted facial recognition cameras from industry sources through DHS’ FirstSource II indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract vehicle.
The report said CBP will deploy the cameras as part of a test being conducted at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
In June, DHS also issued a request for information on biometric data collection methods in efforts to identify those with legal documentations to reside in the U.S. and those who stay in the country unlawfully.
CBP said that airline carriers currently provide exit data and the agency plans to expand biometric strategies from airports to land and sea ports.
