Coleman wrote in a Federal Times article published Friday that IoT offers opportunities for agencies to update aging infrastructure as well as implement data analytics and big data initiatives that could help forecast trends and problems.
Agencies should work to implement internet-connected devices amid the presence of cybersecurity and physical threats, she said.
“Agencies should use creativity and imagination to take advantage of the promise IoT holds – but proceed with caution and intelligence,†Coleman noted.
She advised federal agencies to implement the micro-segmentation approach in an effort to protect IoT networks from potential cyber vulnerabilities.
“By establishing a segmented infrastructure, we can ensure that damage can be inflicted only within the segment of the network that was infiltrated and that bad actors cannot move laterally across the network to other parts of the organization – or even see that those other endpoints exist,†Coleman added.
