Tony Frazier, senior vice president of government solutions at DigitalGlobe, has said the addition of geospatial information services contractor The Radiant Group to DigitalGlobe would help the latter build up its services business.

Frazier wrote in a blog post published Wednesday that he expects the potential combination with Radiant to help DigitalGlobe’s intelligence solutions business expand its customer base across the U.S. intelligence and special operations communities and grow its portfolio of cloud-based platforms.

The acquisition would also help DigitalGlobe facilitate development of open-source platforms and expand its staff of software developers, analysts and data scientists who will work to apply geospatial big data in support of the national security mission, Frazier said.

He also noted the launch of the SpaceNet Challenge that seeks to promote the development of geospatial computer vision algorithms as well as DigitalGlobe’s partnership with CosmiQ Works, NVIDIA and Amazon Web Services to unveil the SpaceNet initiative.

SpaceNet is a web-based repository of satellite imagery and training data that aims to advance the development of machine learning and deep learning algorithms.

DigitalGlobe also purchased data sciences services firm Timbr Tuesday nearly two weeks after it agreed to acquire The Radiant Group for $140 million.
