The Department of Homeland Security‘s science and technology directorate has chosen 10 startup companies to join a new research-and-development program that seeks to build wearable devices for first responders.
DHS said Thursday the EMERGE 2016: Wearable Technology program offers startups the opportunity to equip emergency response personnel with body-worn electronics, sensors and integrated voice and data communications systems.
“We need to find technologies for first responders that can be integrated directly into their existing gear,” said Reginald Brothers, DHS under secretary for science and technology.
Startups selected for the EMERGE 2016 program include:
- Augmate
- CommandWear Systems
- HAAS Alert
- Human Systems Integration
- Lumenus
- LuminAID
- Pear Sports
- Six15 Technologies
- Vault RMS

DHS added the companies will have access to feedback from first responders as well as business development educational resources from industry partners and investors around the world.
