The White House and the National Cyber Security Alliance have launched a campaign that aims to increase the adoption of strong authentication methods for online accounts.
NCSA said Wednesday the Lock Down Your Login initiative calls on the public to move beyond usernames and passwords through stronger authentication that provides multiple forms of verification such as security keys, biometrics or unique codes.
Thirty-five technology companies and nonprofit organizations support the campaign.
NCSA’s Strong Authentication Omnibus Study in July found that 72 percent of people in the U.S. think their accounts are secure with just usernames and passwords and 78 percent agree that government, industry and stakeholders should launch efforts to secure accounts beyond passwords.
Lock Down Your Login is a pillar of the White House’s Cybersecurity National Action Plan and a part of NCSA’s STOP. THINK. CONNECT. campaign for cybersecurity education and awareness, NCSA noted.
The new initiative was unveiled in time for the launch of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, NCSA said.
