Siemens and Omnetric Group have collaborated to install and test a renewable software technology at utility company Duke Energy as part of a project managed by the Energy Department‘s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
Omentric assessed the technical feasibility of the Open Field Message Bus architecture in conjunction with Siemens’ Microgrid Management Software designed for weather and load behavior forecasting, Siemens said Wednesday.
The effort is part of NREL’s Integrated Network Testbed for Energy Grid Research and Technology Experimentation project that aims to address limitations that utilities face when they incorporate renewable energy sources into the grid system.

The integrated technology works to allow the OpenFMB distributed applications distributed on Duke Energy’s microgrid test site to leverage renewable energy resources and battery storage, Siemens noted.
Siemens and Omnetric will also work with CPS Energy to implement a new microgrid system at the Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston in Texas as well as with the University of Texas at San Antonio to integrate UTSA’s renewable power forecasting tool into NREL’s microgrid management system.
Omnetric is a joint venture of Siemens and Accenture.
