NASA and video services company Harmonic have unveiled a 360-degree, virtual reality video on NASA TV’s Youtube channel to show three different perspectives of astronauts in space-walk training.
Harmonic said Wednesday the video was taken at NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory in Houston where astronauts train for future missions through an indoor pool of water and a life-size replica of the International Space Station.
Bart Spriester, Harmonic senior vice president for video products, said the combination of ultra high definition video and VR technologies works to support immersiveness and viewer engagement.
The company added the 360-degree video and NASA TV’s UHD channel were created through Harmonic’s PURE Compression Engine-powered UHD video delivery platform.
Harmonic will demonstrate the video at IBC 2016 from Sept 9 to 13 in Amsterdam.
