multiple rocket launch systemLockheed Martin has produced its first alternative warhead for the U.S. Army‘s Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System under a contract originally awarded in June 2015.

The alternative GMLRS warhead rolled off the assembly line at Lockheed’s facility in Camden, Arkansas and works to engage a target while avoiding the risk of unexploded ordnance, the company said Monday.

The warhead is designed to comply with international treaties governing the use of submunition-based weapons, Lockheed added.

Lockheed-built alternative warhead rockets will be loaded into MLRS launch pods and fired from the company’s  HIMARS or M270 family of launchers.

The company said it has manufactured more than 25,000 GMLRS rocket systems at its Camden facility.
