Huntington Ingalls Industries has secured a $19.1 million contract modification to accelerate design work on the U.S. Navy‘s LX(R) amphibious ship replacement program.
The Naval Sea Systems Command obligated $3 million at the time of the award of the modification from the Navy’s fiscal 2016 research, development, test and evaluation funds, the Defense Department said Wednesday.
Work will occur in Pascagoula, Mississippi through September 2017.
HII was awarded a $13.7 million contract by the Navy in August to design an amphibious platform that will replace the service branch’s Harpers Ferry- and Whidbey Island-class dock landing ships.
LX(R) amphibious warships will be designed with a hull similar to that of San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock LPD 17.
