Huntington Ingalls Industries has completed the first round of at-sea tests that spanned three days in the Gulf of Mexico to test an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer’s main propulsion and other systems.
HII said Friday the alpha trials on the USS John Finn (DDG 113) is part of a three-round test requirement by the U.S. Navy in support of the DDG 51 program’s restart effort.
“We will immediately get back to work on DDG 113 and get her ready for bravo trials later this year,” said George Nungesser, DDG program manager at HII.
The multi-mission USS John Finn destroyer is named after the Navy’s first World War II recipient of the Medal of Honor.
HII noted it has delivered 28 other Arleigh Burke-class destroyers to the Navy including the Ralph Johnson, Paul Ignatius, Delbert D. Black and Frank E. Petersen Jr. units while construction on the future Lenah H. Sutcliffe Higbee is slated for the second quarter of 2017.
