Intercity passenger rail operator Amtrak has selected a team comprised of CH2M and Hill International to support management of a project to renovate and expand the Northeast Corridor rail infrastructure.
The CH2M-Hill International team will work with Amtrak to help increase the capacity of tracks, tunnels, bridges and stations between Newark in New Jersey and New York City’s Penn Station, CH2M said Tuesday.
The companies will also collaborate with the U.S. Transportation Department, NJ TRANSIT and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to carry out the Gateway Project.
Hill International said Tuesday the estimated value of the company’s initial three-year contract with Amtrak is $10 million.
The Gateway Project also seeks to increase current services and double passenger trains that run under the Hudson River as well as modernize the electrical system that powers approximately 450 weekday trains operating along the Northeast Corridor.
The project will also involve rebuilding and replacement of North River Tunnel components that was damaged by Superstorm Sandy.
