satellite airforceLockheed Martin has secured a $45 million contract modification from the U.S. Air Force for logistics, sustainment and combined task force support services to the Space-Based Infrared System.

The Defense Department said Friday Lockheed’s space systems business will conduct studies on the SBIRS CLS and legacy sustainment baseline system for the satellite program’s operational ground systems assets.

DoD noted the project’s goal is to analyze deficiencies, failures or evolving requirements and changes in external user data needs, interfaces or technology.

The AF Space and Missile Systems Center will obligate fiscal year 2016 operations and maintenance funds for work to be performed in California and Colorado through June 30, 2019.

The SBIRS program aims to facilitate the operational transition from the Defense Support Program to the next-generation Overhead Persistent Infrared sensors designed to address the missile early warning, defense, battlespace awareness and technical intelligence mission requirements of defense and intelligence agencies.
