Woolpert has started to collect light detection and ranging elevation data across 49 Tennessee counties in support of three lidar projects managed by the U.S. Geological Survey.
Two of the three contracts USGS awarded to Woolpert support the agency’s 3D Elevation Program that seeks to establish a national map through data collection with lidar technology, the company said Monday.
Woolpert noted the third contract covers data collection work across three counties in western Tennessee and involves a partnership between the company and the Natural Resources Conservation Service.
Sam Moffat, a program director at Woolpert, said the company will collect lidar data to support various local initiatives such as the Tennessee Department of Environmental Conservation’s reclamation efforts.
Dennis Pedersen, director of GIS services at the Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration, said the project helps represent the value of GIS coordination across all levels of government and provide elevation data for a variety of consumers.
