SES Government logoThe government services subsidiary of SES has landed a contract to provide O3b Networks‘ satellite communications technology to a Defense Department customer.

The O3b satcom service uses a satellite beam that operates within 200 milliseconds per roundtrip and consists of a 155 Mbps link, gateway access, terrestrial backhaul, a 2.4m AvL terminal and installation, operations and maintenance services, SES said Monday.

The company added the U.S. government can also order additional O3b services through the contract to address surge requirements.

SES Government Solutions President and CEO Pete Hoene said SES’ acquisition of O3b works to help SES GS provide medium Earth orbit and geosynchronous Earth orbit communications products and services.

SES completed its acquisition of the remaining 50.9-percent stake in O3b in July.

The O3b service works to accelerate the transfer of large files from remote locations, support cloud-based applications and information and provide a simultaneous view of high-definition videos to aid situational awareness, SES noted.

The company said the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration entered a deal with SES GS earlier this year to provide O3b high-throughput services in support of the Pago Pago National Weather Service Office in American Samoa.
