Saab LogoSaab has received a potential $25 million contract to update the Australian army’s ground-based air defense weapon and radar platforms with new modulation, coding and cryptographic techniques.

The company said Monday it will incorporate Mode 5 functionality into the identification friend or foe technology of the RBS 70 air defense weapon and Giraffe AMB radar systems under the AIR 90 program.

Dean Rosenfield, managing director of Saab’s Australian business, said the IFF Mode 5 upgrade is intended to help the Australian army provide force protection from air threats through the RBS 70 and Giraffe AMB radar systems.

Mode 5 systems work to protect GPS position and other extended data and the upgrade is part of Australia’s efforts to operate in a joint and coalition airspace environment beyond 2030.

Giraffe AMB radar is designed to provide high-fidelity airspace situational data, transmit early warning of incoming rocket and mortar attacks and detect hostile fire.
