Evolva has partnered with the U.S. Navy to develop and test a new type of structural composite material based on a polymer resin matrix derived from the company’s resveratrol product.
The company said Wednesday it will collaborate with the Naval Air Systems Command’s research facility in China Lake, California, to advance development of the composite.
Resvetratrol-based prototype materials demonstrated resistance to intense and prolonged heat without degradation during initial tests, according to Evolva.
The company added it sees potential applications for the lighter-than-aluminum, halogen-free material in the military, aviation, aerospace, transportation, electronics, emergency response, construction and mining sectors.
“Engineering with biology provides a way to produce a whole range of product innovations that would otherwise be impossible to achieve economically and sustainably,†said Evolva CEO Neil Goldsmith.
