Ensco Inc. has been awarded a two-year, $4 million contract by the Department of Homeland Security to develop an integrated sensor system for the detection of biological and environmental health hazards in buildings.
The company said Thursday it aims to build, test and integrate a tiered aerosol detection system with dedicated environmental monitoring sensors and emerging commercial sensors under the second phase of the SenseNet project.
“We look forward to working with the DHS to create a biological hazards detection system that meets security needs now and in the future,†said Ensco President Boris Nejikovsky.
Under phase 1, Ensco developed a simulator to show how the company’s proposed two-tiered system would operate when used inside various hypothetical buildings.
The two-tiered system utilized particle sensors to trigger an event and certified the event with a polymerase chain reaction analyzer, the company noted.
