Cubic to Provide Mobile Payment, Cloud Computing Services to Support Miami-Dade Transit System

The Miami-Dade County’s department of transportation and public works has awarded a Cubic business unit a $33 million contract to update the county’s EASY Card revenue management system and deliver back-office cloud computing and support services over 10 years.

The company said Tuesday its transportation systems business will provide its contactless bankcard and a near-field communications mobile open payment system, as well as update Miami-Dade’s fare terminals and EASY Card back office to support account-based transactions.

Cubic will provide open payment technologies to DTPW that work to enable travelers to pay fares through their EASY Card contactless bankcards, NFC-enabled mobile devices or wearable technologies and mobile wallets such as ApplePay, AndroidPay and Masterpass.

“These platforms are designed to enable existing customers to extend the life of their systems while rapidly modernizing their fare programs by embracing the latest in state-of-the art payment, security, and mobile technologies,” said Matt Newsome, Cubic TS senior vice president and general manager for the Americas.

The company added that it will also collaborate with Passport to launch a mobile application designed to allow passengers to check their EASY Card balance and account history, manage their accounts and purchase fare products.

Cubic said it will migrate the back-office system to the Azure cloud environment through a collaboration with Microsoft and offer the latest NextFare, NextAccount and NextWave releases.

Alice Bravo, DTPW director, noted that the payment platforms will roll out in stages over the next 18 months.

Cubic delivered the EASY Card system to the department in 2009.
