Steve Orrin is chief technologist for Intel Corp’s Federal Division and is responsible for Cyber Security and Cloud Strategy, Architecture and Engagements. Steve has held architectural leadership positions at Intel where he has led strategy and projects on Identity, Anti-malware, HTML5 Security, Cloud and Virtualization Security, and is the creator of Trusted Compute Pools Secure Cloud Architecture.

ExecutiveBiz: What technological advancement do you feel will most significantly impact your business in 2016?

Steve Orrin: Intel’s broad portfolio of technologies power many solutions and innovations deployed across the federal ecosystem. One of the top innovations in cybersecurity has been the application of big data analytics to cyber threat intelligence. The ability to identify behaviors in complex network and enterprise environments coupled with the focus on identifying APT campaigns, cross domain and targeted attacks is giving US government agencies and departments the means to address the mounting risks and threats to national security and government data. Advances in both systems that support and the algorithms that drive big data are providing new insights into cybersecurity threats and helping to mitigate losses and risks. Innovations that are changing the game for cyber threat intelligence operations include advances in high-speed low-latency new memory architectures empowering large scale in-memory analytics and software defined networking enabling large volume multi-source data ingestion using commercial Xeon based server platforms and next-gen networking fabrics.  In addition, new algorithms and models leveraging cognitive and machine learning, and providing real time insight and the ingestion of cross domain (host, network, IDAM, etc.) data sources into analytic stacks like Hadoop and Spark, are improving our ability to model behavior as well as detect and identify anomalies, bad actors and stealthy campaigns. These infrastructure and analytics solution innovations are helping CISO’s and cybersecurity teams to get deep visibility into the risks and attacks in their environments.
