Australia’s defense science and technology organization has partnered with Lockheed Martin to develop radar technology for detecting and tracking small, fast-moving targets at a very long range, Defense News reported Friday.
Nigel Pittaway writes the Australian DST Group and Lockheed completed the first phase of validation work on ‘over-the-horizon’ radar technology as part of Project Coorong.
The report said Lockheed invested in the project with the goal to market the resulting technology in the international defense market.
“If the experiment proves true over the next year, potentially this type of system would have a direct appeal to the U.S.,” Jack Mahoney, general manager of Lockheed’s Australian subsidiary, told Defense News.
Mahoney cited a Brazilian maritime awareness program called Sistema de Gerenciamento do Amazonia Azul as an example of a potential application for OTHR technology, according to the report.
