HARRIS1Harris Corp. will provide the National Weather Service with a digital tool in an effort to help NWS study weather information at a local level.

The company will provide the Helios platform to the agency through a contract with Global Science and Technology, Harris said Tuesday.

Helios is a ground-based analytics tool that works to provide localized environmental and weather intelligence through collection and analysis of content from a nationwide network of surveillance and traffic cameras.

“Having real-time, ground-level conditions pushed automatically to meteorologists would allow them to validate their forecasts and improve accuracy,” said Eric Webster, vice president and general manager of environmental solutions business at Harris.

NWS will perform the study through September as part of the National Mesonet Program that works to leverage observation networks across the U.S.
