A team comprising General Dynamics, DRS Technologies and Leonardo-Finmeccanica will build a training facility in Comox, British Columbia if the team wins a $3 billion contract to build search-and-rescue aircraft for Canada.
Former Canadian Air Force chief Steve Lucas told a press conference that Team Spartan offers to construct a 73,000-square-foot building to serve as the location for the group’s proposed C-27J aircraft training hub, DRS said Wednesday.
The retired Canadian lieutenant general works with the consortium.
According to DRS, Team Spartan will design a three-storey SAR training support facility to accommodate instruction classrooms, an air maintenance training hangar and full-flight and sensor-operator simulators if Canada picks the team’s aircraft proposal.
The Canadian government plans to award the contract by the end of 2016 for the replacement of the country’s fleet of Buffalo and Hercules search-and-rescue planes.
Airbus and Embraer have also formed separate teams to chase the contract.
