The Commerce Department has approved two Amazon Web Services cloud computing platforms for use in the agency’s big data projects under a pair of existing authority-to-operate designations.
Commerce Chief Information Officer Steve Cooper and Deputy Chief Data Officer Tyrone Grandison said Wednesday AWS GovCloud and AWS East/West hold ATOs under the government-wide Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program and the department has determined the risk to operations, assets and individuals from the adoption of the systems as acceptable.
In a separate LinkedIn post, Cooper and Grandison said CIOs in each individual department bureau will have to evaluate both AWS tools based on specific requirements and arrive at their own decisions.
