A BAE Systems subsidiary has secured a potential $12.5 million contract from the U.S. Navy to develop a soil-penetrating airborne reconnaissance prototype for threat assessment and neutralization.
The Defense Department said Wednesday the cost-reimbursement contract has a base value of $9.5 million over two years and work could extend through December 28, 2020 if all options are exercised.
BAE Systems’ spectral solutions unit will design, build and demonstrate an airborne technology intended to detect buried mines and improvised explosive devices from an altitude of up to 2,000 feet.
The Office of Naval Research will obligate $500,000 from fiscal 2015 research, development, test and evaluation funds at the time of award.
ONR awarded the contract after a competitive procurement under the Long Range Broad Agency Announcement for Navy and U.S. Marine Corps science and technology.
