Austal USA formallyÂ turned over theÂ USS MontgomeryÂ littoral combat ship to the U.S. Navy at a ceremony held Thursday at the company’s shipyard in Mobile, Alabama.
The Navy said FridayÂ Montgomery, which isÂ scheduled to be commissioned inÂ September,Â will beÂ the military branch’s seventh LCSÂ and fourth ship of itsÂ IndependenceÂ class.
Capt. Tom Anderson, the Navy’s LCS program manager, said the service branch will deploy MontgomeryÂ next year to supportÂ anti-submarine, surface and mine countermeasure operations of the branch around the globe.
Austal USA will design and buildÂ Independence-variant ships while Lockheed will buildÂ Freedom-variant ships for the Navy under their contracts.
