market researchA Technavio report forecasts a compound annual growth rate of 29 percent for the directed-energy weapons market by 2020 due to the continuous demand for DEW systems and equipment in law enforcement.

The report published April 2016 by Research and Markets states that demand for non-lethal weapons is a primary driver in the market, with the U.S., Russia, Israel and Japan expected to use those weapons to deal with territorial disputes and extremist attacks.

“Changing environments and emerging technologies have resulted in the defense departments of different countries to develop new and improved weapons and equipment,” Technavio said.

The increase in non-lethal weapon research and development is also supported by the release of higher defense budgets, the market research company added.

DEW is a weapon system capable of emitting highly focused energy to destroy targets and can be used for anti-personnel weapon systems, missile defense systems and disabling lightly armored vehicles, the report noted.

Technavio said the report is based on a combination of primary and secondary information from key participants in the industry.

The report names the following key vendors in the DEW market:

  • BAE Systems
  • Boeing
  • Lockheed Martin
  • Northrop Grumman
  • Raytheon
