Saab Group has unveiled its Sea Wasp remotely operated vehicle the company built to relocate, identify and neutralize underwater improvised explosive devices and support anti-terrorism operations below the surface.
The defense and security company said Tuesday Sea Wasp is based on the Saab Seaeye commercial ROV line and the U.S. Underwater Hazardous Device Response Community’s explosive ordnance disposal purposes and procedures.
Sea Wasp is designed to be remotely controlled by two-person teams in efforts to put distance between operators and IEDs instead of current procedures where divers perform manual disposal of IED threats, Saab noted.
Saab added it worked with the Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office to send Sea Wasp prototypes for tests to EOD units of the U.S. Navy, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
The three agencies will conduct Sea Wasp training, testing and evaluation over the next 10 to 12 months, Saab noted.
