Iridium Communications has introduced a technology platform the company designed to help users access satellite-based positioning, navigation and timing data in locations where GPS services are limited or unavailable.
The Satellite Time and Location system will work to verify GPS, Galileo and Glonass navigation signals when deployed through Iridium’s constellation of cross-linked satellites in low-Earth orbit, the company said Monday.
Matt Desch, Iridium CEO, said he believes the STL offering can also serve as a tool for government and commercial organizations to manage the cybersecurity of GPS-dependent critical infrastructure assets.
The company partnered with Herndon, Virginia-based timing and location technology firm Satelles to deliver the STL platform via Iridium’s paging channels.
Iridium said it demonstrated the system’s potential applications for the military, academic and commercial sectors.
STL will be supported by the global Iridium NEXT constellation that is scheduled to be fully operational in late 2017.
