Iridium’s Scott Scheimreif, ABI Research’s Patrick Connolly and Gopher Protocol’s Danny Rittman discuss future location tracking and navigation offerings and market prospects with Investorideas.com.
Connolly said ABI Research predicts the global positioning device market will reach nearly $2 billion by 2021 as the market experiences a transition period, Investorideas.com said Thursday.
“The market is undergoing a significant transition period as traditional markets struggle to find mass-market adoption, yet new technologies and markets will create a lot of upside potential for those that move quickly,†added Connolly.
Rittman, chief technology officer of Gopher Protocol, said the differentiating factor of the company’s newly developed location technology Guardian Patch from GPS is that it uses a radio-based, secured, private channel and works even in the absence of a global positioning system.
Iridium noted its recently released Satellite Time and Location product as an alternative GPS tool that operates in GPS-denied environment and provides position or timing source when GPS is not available.
“Compared to [global navigation satellite system] signals like GPS, Iridium signals have much higher raw signal power as seen by a receiver on Earth, making them attractive for use in location applications where GNSS signals are obstructed, for example deep indoors,†said Scheimreif, vice president of government programs at Iridium.
