Huntington Ingalls Industries has delivered the USS John P. Murtha amphibious transport dock to the U.S. Navy.
HII said Friday Richard Schenk, vice president for program management, signed the official DD 250 document to transfer the custody of the amphibious transport dock to the service branch.
Schenk said the company aims to deliver two more ships to complete the class, which currently comprises 10 ships in the Navy’s fleet.
HII noted the 11th landing platform dock called Portland is under construction and is scheduled to be christened May 21.
The company added it has received $300 million in advanced procurement funding for the 12th San Antonio-class ship named Fort Lauderdale.
LPD 26 is named after the late John P. Murtha, a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve veteran and representative of Pennsylvania’s 12th congressional district from 1974 to 2010.
The amphibious transport dock ships are designed to support various Marine Air Ground Task Force operations including amphibious and expeditionary missions, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions.
