General Dynamics’ mission systems business unit has received a contract modification from the U.S. Navy to produce more than 30 digital modular radios for use onboard naval surface vessels and submarines.
The latest order for the AN/USC-61(C) radios represents the sixth option under a contract General Dynamics received in 2010, the company said Thursday.
Paul Parent, vice president of radio products for General Dynamics’ mission systems unit, said the company refreshed the radio technology’s software in an effort to increase system functionality.
General Dynamics updated the DMR radios with the Mobile User Objective System waveform to help users connect the radio system to the MUOS satellite communications network.
The software-defined radios serve as a communications hub for Navy vessels and submarines, where sailors and commanders share data using a broad military radio spectrum.
