Finmeccanica has added the Osprey airborne surveillance radar to its portfolio of electronically scanning radars in effort to offer a 360-degree field of view for different types of aircraft such as unmanned aerial vehicles.
The company said Thursday Osprey radars are built with a flat-panel design to support installation into small platforms as well as the e-scan technology that works to deliver simultaneous coverage in multiple directions.
Norway has bought Osprey units along with 16 AW101 helicopters to support its Norway All Weather Search And Rescue Helicopter program, the company added.
Finmeccanica, which will rebrand as Leonardo in January 2017, noted that it manufactured the radars at its Edinburgh site in the U.K. following an inward investment.
The product will be offered as part of the company’s Seaspray family of e-scan radars that are currently used by the U.K. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard, among others.
The company’s portfolio of radar technology also includes fire control radars and combat radar, both electronically and mechanically scanned.
