U.S. Navy Capt. Dan Brintzinghoffer, Littoral Combat Ship program manager, has said the branch may choose an updated LCS design in 2018 instead of 2019 as part of efforts to fall in line with Defense Department budget plans, Breaking Defense reported Wednesday.
Sydney Freedberg writes Brintzinghoffer said at the Sea-Air-Space conference the service branch plans to publish a formal request for proposals for a refreshed frigate version of LCS in 2017 and further down-select a design by the end of 2018.
Brintzinghoffer noted the DoD’s five-year spending plan includes funds for one LCS in 2018, Freedberg wrote.
He further said the Navy will not elaborate on the implementation of LCS upgrades in order to give competitors more room to modify the current design.
