nuclear power plantHorizon Nuclear Power has chosen a joint venture of Bechtel, Japan Gas Corporation and Hitachi subsidiary Hitachi Nuclear Energy Europe to build a two-reactor nuclear power plant in the U.K.

Bechtel said Friday the Menter Newydd JV will perform initial front-end engineering and construction planning for the Wylfa Newydd plant in Wales before construction starts in 2020.

Wylfa Newydd will work to supply low-carbon nuclear energy to as many as five million households and generate up to 10,000 jobs, Bechtel added.

Craig Albert, Bechtel president for the nuclear, security and environmental business unit, said the plant will also seek to support the U.K.’s energy demand and carbon reduction goals.

According to Bechtel, an alliance between Hitachi and General Electric will provide boiling water reactors that will be integrated into the plant, while Japan Gas will work to contribute its previous engineering and construction experience with refineries and power plants.

Ty Troutman, Bechtel general manager of the nuclear power business, said the company looks to apply lessons learned from the construction of the Watts Bar Unit 2 reactor in Tennessee.
