Battelle and Boeing have agreed to jointly pursue work to operate Sandia National Laboratories in partnership with the University of New Mexico, Texas A&M University System and the University of Texas System.
The Energy Department’s National Nuclear Security Administration currently looks for a company to manage SNL, a federally funded research and development center tasked with the development and delivery of U.S. nuclear weapons, Battelle said Tuesday.
DOE released the final request for proposals on May 18 and expects to select a contractor by the end of the year.
Jeffrey Wadsworth, Battelle president and CEO, said the team seeks to collaborate with NNSA to help step up the nation’s nuclear security posture.
The three university partners aim to help maintain Sandia’s science, technology and engineering systems, Battelle said.
Sandia Corp., a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin, currently operates the lab.
