BAE Systems has secured a potential $31.8 million contract from the U.S. Navy to maintain the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Gettysburg.
The company won an base $29.4 million contract with options that will cover repair, maintenance and modernization work from June through December, BAE said Thursday.
Dave Thomas, BAE’s Norfolk shipyard vice president and general manager, said the company looks to build on experience working on the Navy’s fleet of Aegis cruisers.
“This maintenance availability will prepare the Gettysburg for more extensive modernization later,” he added.
BAE said the 567-foot ship also features the Aegis Combat System, which works to provide air defense for aircraft carrier battle groups.
The maintenance work will occur at the company’s Norfolk shipyard in Virginia.
