Expeditionary Fast Transport (1)Austal USA has received a $24.6 million contract to buy long-lead-time materials needed for the design and construction of a shallow-draft vessel meant to transport U.S. Navy personnel and equipment.

The company will use the funds to obtain ship sets of main propulsion engines, shafting and bearings, waterjet propulsors, stern ramp and anchor chains for Expeditionary Fast Transport 12, the Defense Department said Wednesday.

The Naval Sea Systems Command obligated $18.5 million at the time of award from the Navy’s fiscal 2016 shipbuilding and conversion funds.

Austal USA will perform contract work in Michigan, Texas, Florida and Washington through March 2020.

The EPF fleet will serve as a lift for personnel, supplies and equipment for the Navy as well as the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army.
