The U.S. Army and the National Science Teachers Association have announced 20 student teams in grade six to nine from five U.S. regions as finalists for the 2016 eCYBERMISSION national competition.
The NSTA-run online contest is sponsored by the service branch and aims to encourage students to identify and address community challenges through projects based on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, NSTA said Friday.
The teams were picked from a group of 60 regional finalists and will convene in Washington for the contest’s five-day National Judging and Educational Event that will kick off on June 20.
The contest called for participants to come up with projects that seek to address community problems in areas such as national security, health, food, force and motion, alternative energy sources and robotics.
Each member of the national finalist teams will get $2,000 in U.S. Series EE Savings Bonds and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington for the NJEE.
The military branch will also award up to five grants worth $5,000 each to regional and national teams in order to help them execute their projects as part of the Army Educational Outreach Program.
