An Exelon Corp. subsidiary has been selected to assist in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s effort to transport American shad and river herring to their spawning grounds on the Susquehanna River over the next 50 years.
Exelon Generation will work to renovate two existing fish lifts at Conowingo Dam in order to facilitate the return of up to 100,000 American shad and 100,000 river herring to their spawning grounds every year, Exelon said Monday.
The goal is to restore 2 million shad and 5 million herring above the four dams to the Susquehanna River at the end of the project’s life cycle.
“The trap and transport program allows fish to bypass Holtwood, Safe Harbor and York Haven Dams to successfully reach their spawning grounds,†said Ron DeGregorio, a senior vice president of Exelon Generation and president of Exelon Power.
As part of the agreement, Exelon Generation will also help to transport American eel upstream through 2030 and beyond as outlined in the Muddy Run Pumped Storage Facility license.
