A BWX Technologies subsidiary has received a potential $241.5 million contract from an unidentified prime contractor to support an Energy Department program that aims to convert highly enriched uranium into a form suitable for fuel.
Nuclear Fuel Services Inc. will help downblend as much as 10.4 metric tons of HEU under the HEU disposition initiative of DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration, BWX Technologies said Thursday.
“We are very pleased to continue providing our services and support to the NNSA and its prime contractor in this very important arena,†said Peyton Baker, BWXT’s president and CEO.
The NFS business will carry out the task through 2019 in support of the agency’s Office of Material Management and Minimization.
Low enriched uranium materials can be used as fuel for commercial nuclear reactors, BWXT noted.
