Saab has rolled out a three-dimensional naval radar technology the company designed to help maritime users perform air and surface surveillance operations.
The Sea Giraffe 1X active electronically scanned array radar is built to integrate with small patrol ships and requires a small number of line-replaceable units and little power to operate, Saab said Tuesday.
“Traditionally, smaller patrol ships have only used surface surveillance radar – but as unmanned aerial vehicles become more prevalent, these ships must begin to add air surveillance capabilities as well,” noted Gene Bojarski, business development manager for naval programs at Saab’s U.S. defense and security business.
Sea Giraffe 1X employs a company-made Enhanced Low, Slow and Small surveillance tool intended for detection and classification of small UAV threats.
Saab introduced the AESA radar at this week’s Maritime Security East Conference in Norfolk, Virginia.
