Lockheed Martin has received a $43 million contract from Concord Blue to start the construction of a power generation facility in Herten, Germany, in an effort to supply renewable energy to residents and businesses in the area.
The 5-megawatt plant will work to convert forestry waste to power through the advanced gasification process using Concord Blue’s Reformer technology, Lockheed said Tuesday.
The project is set for completion in 2017 and represents the second phase of an agreement signed in 2014 for the planning, simulation, logistics and design for the project.
Mo Vargas, director of bio-energy at Lockheed Martin Energy, which was formed out of the company’s integration of its energy platforms, said the Herten facility will utilize the company’s bio-energy technologies to address clean energy and waste management matters.
Lockheed Martin and Concord Blue also moved to extend a 2013 agreement for Lockheed to serve as Concord Blue’s contractor for future bio-energy conversion projects though 2026.
