Harris Corp. has secured a contract to provide U.K.-based air navigation services provider NATS a cloud-based voice over Internet protocol communications platform to support air traffic management operations in the U.K. and Europe.
The contract covers the installation of the Harris-built Voice Communications System for the 21st Century at three NATS-run facilities in the U.K. to deliver networked voice communications to at least 600 controller positions, Harris said Tuesday.
Ed Sayadian, president of mission networks at Harris Corp., said the company’s VCS21 system will work to support NATS through the contract award, in addition to the Federal Aviation Administration.
NATS will also integrate the system with the Single European Sky ATM Research collaborative project that aims to improve air traffic control and update European airspace.
NATS CEO Martin Rolfe said the move to update its voice communications system is part of a program that seeks to improve air traffic for its airport and airline customers in the U.K. over the next five years.
The contract was announced at the three-day World ATM Congress that kicked off Tuesday in Madrid, Spain.
