The Scottish Borders Council has awarded an estimated $130 million contract to CGI Group to help establish the Scottish Center of Excellence for information and communications technology within the Scottish Borders region.
The council said Monday the 13-year digital services contract requires CGI’s support in the creation of the Scottish ICT Delivery Center of Excellence and the development of a digital platform that aims to connect the region’s citizens with the local government.
The projects are expected to create 200 jobs, enable existing ICT staff to stay within the Scottish Borders and subsequently bring approximately $141 million in investments to the local economy, the council added.
CGI will also offer apprenticeship and employment opportunities to local residents and set up high-speed broadband services to local schools and businesses.
Council Leader David Parker said the deal with CGI aims to serve as a step toward the Scottish Borders’ goal to become a prime business location.
