Boeing has unveiled a new unmanned undersea vehicle the company designed to operate autonomously and to launch and recover without support from vessels.
Echo Voyager will work to gather information while deployed at sea and transmit collected data to users in real time, Lance Towers, director of sea and land at Boeing’s Phantom Works subsidiary, said Thursday.
The 51-foot-long UUV is built with a modular payload bay and a rechargeable power system.
Boeing plans to conduct sea trials on the autonomous underwater platform this summer off the California coast.
The company developed Echo Voyager as part of its UUV portfolio that also includes the 18-foot Echo Ranger and 32-foot Echo Seeker vehicles.
